A pair of ruby red slippers that were worn by legendary actress Judy Garland in the iconic film ‘The Wizard of Oz’ that were stolen from a museum nearly two decades ago sold for a whopping $28 million at auction over the weekend.
Heritage Auctions projected a potential sale of $3 million for the shoes that represent a big part of movie history, but bidding quickly outpaced that projected sale amount in mere seconds and crushed them in minutes.
The buyer will pay a grand total of $32.5 million, which includes auction house fees.
The ruby red slippers were on display at the Judy Garland Museum in her hometown of Grand Rapids, Minnesota, in 2005 when Terry Jon Martin broken into the museum with a hammer and broke through the display case to nab the cinematic treasure.
The slippers were ultimately recovered by the FBI back in 2018 and were returned in February of this year to memorabilia collector Michael Shaw, who had loaned them to the museum.
