Country Singer-songwriter Jan Howard, member of Grand Ole Opry has died at 91. Announced the music institution to which she belonged for almost 50 years.
Dan Rogers, vice president and executive producer of Grand Ole Opry, paid tribute to the songwriter in a statement, “Jan Howard was a great inspiration in country music, on the Opry, in a lifetime,” he said. “How lucky we were to have so many nights on stage and to chat with her behind. We are all better people for having had it in our lives, “he added.
Missouri-born Howard had his first hit in 1960 with “The One You Slip Around With” and had many others such as “Evil on Your Mind” and “Bad Seed.” However, his biggest success was her collaboration with Bill Anderson, with songs like “For Loving You”, “Someday We’ll Be Together” and “I Know You’re Married.
She also wrote for others, such as “It’s All Over But the Crying” that he wrote for Kitty Wells, and “I Never Once Stopped Loving You” for Connie Smith.
Her most intimate song was perhaps “My Son,” a plea for her son to return from Vietnam. The son died two weeks after the song was released in 1968. Another son later committed suicide.
According to Billboard, survived by a son, two grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
